I’m excited to share my new favorite apple pie recipe with you, it’s a cake! This three layer apple pie cake is filled with soft sweet apples and all the traditional spices you’ve come to love. This apple pie cake recipe is easy to make too.

A New Twist On An Old Classic
Apple Pie is an American classic that dates all the way back to the civil war. Since apples are often readily available here in the states, it quickly became a treat for soldiers on both sides of the front. Later, during the first World War, The Boston Globe reported that American soldiers abroad were craving this classic American dessert. The words of the Boston journalists quickly set apple pie up as an iconic American dessert.
Today, we enjoy apple pie all over the US, especially in Fall. Handmade apple pies grace American tables every Thanksgiving. This sweet treat reminds us of home, family, and our history, so we pass down the recipe, each adding our own little twists along the way.

How To Make Apple Pie Cake
Ready to learn the steps to make your very own apple pie cake this Fall? Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
Apple Pie Filling Ingredients
- butter, sugar, cornstarch
- 2 cups peeled and chopped gala apples
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
Apple Spice Cake Ingredients & Supplies
- butter, sugar, brown sugar
- canola oil
- vanilla extract
- eggs
- flour
- baking powder
- ground cinnamon, allspice
- apple cider
- whole milk
Cake Frosting Ingredients & Supplies
- butter
- powdered sugar
- heavy whipping cream
- vanilla
- cinnamon
Caramel Sauce Ingredients & Supplies
- light brown sugar
- heavy whipping cream
- butter
- pure vanilla extract
- 1 tsp cinnamon
Once you’ve gathered everything you need, follow these steps for an apple pie cake your whole family will love!
Apple Pie Filling Steps
- First, melt the butter in a medium pot.
- Then, stir in the apples, sugar, and cinnamon.
- Mix in 1/2 cup of water until combined and bring the mixture to a low simmer.
- Next, in a small bowl, combine the remaining 1/4 cup of water with the cornstarch and whisk lightly until smooth.
- Then, add the cornstarch mixture to the apples and cook 1-2 minutes more, until the mixture has thickened. Let cool completely.



Apple Spice Layered Cake
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spray the round cake pans with baking spray.
- Beat the butter, sugars, oil, and vanilla in a large bowl until creamy and combined.
- Next, beat in the eggs one at a time until combined.
- In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and allspice until combined.
- Gradually beat in the dry ingredients
- Then, gradually beat in the apple cider and milk until combined and smooth.
- Next, divide the batter between the 3 cake pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow cooling completely.
- Once cooled, remove cakes from cake pans and place them onto cake boards.
- Using a cake leveler, remove the domes of the cakes to create even cake layers for stacking.

Cake Frosting & Building Steps
Using a standing mixer, beat the butter, powdered sugar, heavy whipping cream, vanilla, and cinnamon until combined, smooth and fluffy with peaks.
Building the cake:
- Using one cake layer, pipe a ring of frosting around the edge of the cake.
- Then, scoop about ¾ cup of the apple pie filling into the center of the cake.
- Next, place the second cake layer on top of the pie filling.
- Pipe another ring of frosting around the edge of the cake and fill it with ¾ cup of apple pie filling. Place the third cake layer on top.
- Finally, place the cake into the fridge while you make the caramel sauce.
Caramel Sauce Steps
- First, combine all ingredients into a medium pot over medium heat.
- Whisk the mixture gradually until it begins to boil.
- Then, remove from heat and allow to cool completely.
- Once cooled, pour caramel sauce into the squeeze bottle.
- Remove the cake from the fridge and pipe dollops of the caramel sauce down the sides of the cake and cover the entire top of the cake.
- Then, take the remaining frosting and pipe dollops around the top of the cake. Optional: Top with cinnamon sticks.
- Enjoy your delicious apple pie cake!
