Ocean Cupcakes
This recipe only calls for a few ingredients and if you use a boxed cake mix and store-bought icing this amazing shark theme recipe will be done in minutes.
- One dozen vanilla cupcakes (we used a cake mix for ours), completely cool to the touch
- 3-4 oz. white fondant
- Black gel food coloring
- butter
- icing sugar
- 1-2 tbsp milk
- Royal blue gel food coloring
- Blue gel frosting
You can also make your favorite vanilla cake mix to start preparing this delicious cupcake recipe.
You’ll want to make sure your cupcakes are cool to the touch before decorating (or else your buttercream will melt/slide right off!)

To start, add a couple of small drops of black gel food coloring into your white fondant and knead until tinted. The fondant should come out light grey.
Divide the fondant into one dozen spheres, about ½ an inch in size.

To form each shark fin, slightly flatten each sphere and press the top to a point. It should look like a triangle then curve the tip of the fondant triangle to give it a more realistic shark fin shape.

Homemade Buttercream Frosting
In a large bowl, mix your butter, icing sugar and milk together with an electric mixer. Start on slow speed and increase it to high.
Once the ingredients are well-combined, add the royal blue gel food coloring. Beat again until your icing is completely tinted.
Quick Tip for Easy Decorating: For this shark cupcake you can skip making homemade icing and buy a jar of white icing and color it blue.

Scoop buttercream into a piping bag with Wilton tip 1M attached. Frost each cupcake.

Using the blue gel frosting, decorated each frosted cupcake with “squiggle” lines.

Insert a toothpick at the bottom of each fondant shark fin.
